Devoted Flames

Hello. I'm 21 and from New Zealand and I like to read. I can be quite weird. I am very quiet. Self proclaimed book addict and introvert. I hope to use this site to find more books as well as read all the books that I currently have that I need to read, and maybe reread a few. I want to talk about each part of the book after I read it. If you have any suggestions for me to read or would just like to talk, feel free to. I'm right here. Byeeee.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown - Holly Black

There's no such thing as death. In nature nothing dies. From each sad remnant of decay. Some forms of life arise. - Charles Mackay

All this was about was Tana and Aiden's relationship and how much of a jerk he was.

Aiden is horrible. He truly was the worst boyfriend ever. He pushed the limits. He did it all to get a reaction from Tana. He took her to parties and hooked up with girls, hooked up with guys, in front of her seeing what she'd do. She didn't wanna be one of those crazy ass girls that go and cry about it. So she'd go up after he'd finish and introduce herself and offer tips. Once he even asked her to hookup with this guy that he'd just hooked up with. And she did. He was shocked. A few weeks later he broke up with her because he thought they were getting "too serious".

Come on. That whole relationship was childish. He was such an idiot to do that to her. If my boyfriend ever did that I wouldn't even go ape crazy shit on his ass, I'd just leave and say nothing ever. Even though I so wanna go ape shit on his ass right now. He's such an idiot. And I'm a girl so were all a little crazy.

I kinda hate Aiden right now.

And I only feel worse, I'm getting more and more sicker by the day. Hellllppppp.

Hate this shittttt.

He whom the Gods love dies young. - Menander

So Tana did decide to go back to get Aiden and Gavriel. She drove her car to the window and climbed back in. But it was darker, and the other vampires were gonna come in when it was full dark. They wanted to kill her. So pretty much she makes Aiden help her with getting Gavriel all wrapped up. He gets wrapped in a bag as well as a blanket. Aiden then jumps out the window because the sun is getting and then Gavriel follows and then the vampires come in. Tana is still in the room. She gets on the window and jumps out, the vampire grabs her leg but she's already out, but the sunlight sears the vampires arm and burns it. Ouch. Then Tana makes Aiden drive, because she's too sore to do it and because it will help fight his urge to kill her. Gavriel is in the car boot so he can't really do much. All we know is he needs to go because he is in trouble with some high up vampire and needs saving. Of course it has to be Tana that saves him.

This was a crazy chapter. I did enjoy it, I had trouble with it though. Mainly cause I feel really sick right now and have a hard time enjoying anything when I'm sick. Poor Tana though, she's all scratched up and everything. I want to know what Gavriel did to be in that much trouble with those other vampires.

Also, sorry for these oddly constructed para-reviews. I'm not a strong writer as you can tell. I want to get better. Also I'm too sick to even bother with putting effort into this one, so its slightly more horrible that the other 4.

Why fear death? It is the most beautiful adventure in life. - Charles Frohman

This was all about a dream Tana has, that's reoccurring.

They both end up as vampires. It's usually Tana first, she gets bitten, her dad locks her up and wont let her out, he has 30 locks on the door. One day she creeps up and bites him so he can't lock her in and then she turns into a vampire, then her mom comes in a begs her to bites her, so she does, and then the mother bites the father and then she turns into a full vampires and then her and Tana run off together and live happy little vampire lives, but they don't kill anyone.

This was a really weird chapter. It was really short as well. I don't have much to say on it. But it was strange, I do like these dream/flashback chapters. It's nice to have a little break. I kinda like Black's writing. I've never read anything by her before. And so far this book is pretty decent, I must say.

Death is the dropping of the flower, that the fruit may swell. - Henry Ward Beecher

Tana decides to enter the room, and the vampire must be tied up cause he didn't jump. She goes to try to take the tape off Aiden (her ex boyfriend's) mouth and the vampire is trying to warn her, but he can't. Once she's get the tape off, she turns around and Aiden BITES HER! He's a vampire too (new one). He instantly apologizes and then she goes to try to help the other vampire (Gavriel).

She decides to pull the dark stuff off the windows so light comes in, she hears noises at the door and tells them not to come in because there is light, there must be more vampires in the house. She wants to help them and take them both out by putting them in the trunk of her car. So she jumps out the window and goes and sits in her car. Finally feeling in control.

So this part was kinda strange. She finds out someone she used to love is now a vampire, and he bit her, so now she is infected. And Gavriel was so helpful she wants to help him too. He seems nice, for a monster.

We all labour against our own cure, for death is the cure of all diseases. - Sir Thomas Browne

So here we had a flashback scene to where Tana was 6 and she tells the story of one Vsmpire, Casper. He was romantic vampire I guess. He didn't wanna kill his prey but he didn't want to be alone either. He would seduce people and then bite them and run off, turning them into vampires and then they wouldn't know what to do so they would end up killing people as well.

A few years later, her mother got infected and her dad locked her up, because after about 90 days the infection would be out of her system and she would be human again. She would scream in the middle of the night and it would upset her and her sister. Her dad would drink and drink and turn the tv up so he couldn't hear. But they knew. After 40 days or something her mom convinced Tana to let her out, saying she was all better and her dad was just trying to lock her up and never let her out. Tana unlocked the door...and her mother bit her.

Wow, so that flashback was horrible. Her mom got bitten and then she bit her daughter. You would never forget something like that. But it's a disease. You can't help how you act when that happens. I wonder what happened to her mother after that. Since we know Tana was okay, she didn't turn into anything. She's fine.

Nothing can happen more beautiful than death. - Walt Whitman

Wow. So we start off this book with Tana waking up, in the bathtub. There's cups and the smell of alcohol everywhere and then she realises she was at a party last night. She went by herself. She can't remember much except for getting reading and going to the bathroom to escape her ex. She kinda starts freaking out a bit cause she thinks everyone has left and they're gonna be somewhere making fun of her for sleeping through everything.

But then she gets up, walks around and then she arrives in a room and sees a hand and then realises that she's the first one up. But then looks around. Everyone is still laying there, but they're all dead! Vampires. She doesn't scream but she tries to sit down and find out what to do, after a while she decides to get up and look for her coat, phone and keys so she can leave and call someone...

She gets to the room and it's dark. But she sees her ex boyfriend, tied up, with duct-tape over his mouth. He's alive..but across the room she sees another boy, with bright red eyes...the vampire I think...

And that is where we finished the first chapter.

Oh my gosh, what a way to start the book. I have to admit I was getting a bit bored in the first few pages, I'm really bad and letting books get interesting. But ones all the bodies came in I was just like damnnnn and then she saw her ex tied up and I was like omg what and then the vampire and I kinda wanted to scream. But wow, that IS how you start a book. I also didn't know it was about vampires until then. I didn't read a review on it, I just thought it looked good and wanted to read it. I'm not sure if I like it yet or not, but the end of the first chapter definitely got me hooked and I want to read more. All the chapters also start off with a quote so I think that's how I'm gonna start the updates from now on. :)

I was getting pretty distracted this week, so I stopped reading my book. I did like that book, and I do want to read it. I just don't want to read it right now. I deleted it off my currently reading and deleted all my updates on it, sorry. But I do have another book that I just recieved and would really like to start reading that one. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black. I'm really looking forward to this one. So I might start that one.
